80/20 rule

A very valuable lesson to learn .......

In my recent leadership skills course in KL, the trainer talked about 80/20 rule. What does it mean? Originally, the Pareto (Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto) Principle referred to 20% of his countrymen controlled 80% of the wealth and power in Italy. It was a simple enough discovery. But from that has come the 80/20 rule. In a lot of things in life. 80% of the results tend to be produced by 20 percent of the activity.

The 80/20 rule teaches a simple but important lesson: Concentrate on the 20 percent. Put a value in where you will get value out. If 80 percent of the results come from 20 percent of the effort, capitalise on that positive 20 percent. Shift your emphasis so that you are spending less time with the negative 80 percent. The rule applies to everything - time, people, products, materials... etc.

By using 80/20 rule, you can spend your time concentrating on what works well and prevent yourself wasting time on what is not working. Example, see what activities are really important which can generate the most result. This is because focusing on the critical 20% is time-saver.
